Rapper Guru, whose real name is Keith Elam, is reportedly recuperating after heart surgery after suffering a massive heart attack that left him in a coma'
The artist, who rose to fame with the duo Gang Starr before a string of successful solo records, was due to undergo surgery Monday, according to a Sirius radio interview with his former partner in Gang Starr, DJ Premier'
Premier reportedly characterized Guru as "fighting for his life'" He was joined in the hospital by his sister, Tricia, who said, "The family is handling it as best they can'"
Guru, 43, has kept a low profile since his last solo album, "Lost and Found," was released in May 2009' The album ended a two-year break following his fourth Jazzmatazz album, "The Hip-Hop Jazz Messenger: Back to the Future'"
Gang Starr never officially broke up, but hasn't been active in more than five years' Its last album was 2003's "Ownerz'"
According to AllHipHop News, Guru's partner, MC Solar, released an official statement Monday regarding the Guru's health'
"Guru is struggling with a serious health issue' We, the whole 7 Grand Records family, appreciate all your love and well wishes," Solar said in a statement' "We continue to hold out hope that Guru will make a full recovery from this' We ask that his privacy on this matter will be respected' Again, thank you for all your support through this trying time'"
